Supports for Students and Families
Our thoughts continue to be with Liam’s family and friends during this very difficult time. His loss is felt deeply across the school community, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to all who knew and cared for him.
During times of loss, it is normal for students and adults alike to experience a wide range of feelings, including sadness, worry, or confusion. Some may need extra reassurance, a chance to talk, or simply time and space to process. School-based supports are available, and help is accessible through community resources. We encourage families to check in with their students, offer opportunities to talk if needed, and reach out for support whenever necessary.
Ways to support your student:
- Maintain normal routines as much as possible.
- Ask questions to determine their understanding of the event and emotional state.
- Give them permission to grieve. Avoid reducing the loss.
- Provide age and developmentally appropriate answers/support.
- Connect them with professionals and other trusted adults.
- Help them adopt healthy coping strategies.
Difficult events can affect adults as well as students. Paying attention to your own well-being—by taking breaks, connecting with trusted supports, and allowing yourself time to process—can help you feel more steady and better able to support your student.

International Albinism Awareness Day
Albinism is an inherited genetic condition that reduces the amount of melanin pigment formed in the skin, hair and/or eyes. Albinism occurs in all racial and ethnic groups throughout the world. In the U.S., approximately one in 18,000 to 20,000 people has some type of albinism. In other parts of the world, the occurrence can be as high as one in 3,000. Most children with albinism are born to parents whose hair and eye color are typical for their ethnic backgrounds.
On Friday, June 12th, we are asking staff and students to wear yellow to help bring awareness to Albinism. The school will also be handing out yellow wristbands and taking some time to give information to each classroom.
More information on the condition can be found here: Welcome to NOAH
- COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS -
This unique initiative gives one local student the chance to spend the day with Mayor Bryan Paterson, learning firsthand about municipal government, civic leadership, and community issues. The selected student will tour City Hall, attend meetings and events, sit in the Mayor’s chair in Council Chambers, and enjoy a personalized day based on their interests related to local government.
Students are invited to submit a short video application answering questions such as:
- Why they want to be Mayor for a Day
- What their first action as Mayor would be
- What they would like to learn about the City of Kingston
- Their favourite thing about living in Kingston
Key details:
- Open to current Grade 5 students (ages 10–11)
- Application deadline: Friday, June 19 at 4 p.m.
- One winner will be contacted on Wednesday, June 24
- Applications must be submitted in video format
The City is committed to making the program accessible to all interested students. Families who require assistance with filming or submitting their application can contact Mayor@CityofKingston.ca to arrange support at City Hall.
Additional details for the program can be found here: Mayor for a Day 2026 |
